Google Business Profile Suspended? Here's How Contractors Get It Back
If your Google Business Profile is suspended, Google has decided the profile or the account behind it breaks one of its rules, and it's hidden from customers until you fix it. Open Google's Business Profile appeals tool, read the reason it gives, fix that exact problem, then submit an appeal with proof your business is real. Google says reviews take up to five business days.
I'm Jordan Peacock. I help home-service businesses in Pittsburgh and Western PA book more jobs from Google. A suspension is the fastest way to lose the phone calls you're used to. Here's how to get the profile back without making it worse.
First, don't panic-edit
The worst thing you can do in the first hour is start changing things. Every edit to a suspended profile can add confusion. And deleting it to start fresh throws away your reviews.
Do this instead:
- Take screenshots of the dashboard and any email from Google.
- Open the appeals tool and read the reason.
- Fix only what that reason points to.
- Then appeal.
Why contractor profiles get suspended
Google's appeals tool tells you which policy it says you broke. For contractors, it's almost always one of these.
Keywords in the business name
"Dave's Roofing" is fine. "Dave's Roofing Pittsburgh Roof Repair and Replacement" is not. Google's guidelines say your name has to match your real-world name, the one on your truck, signs, and paperwork. This is the most common cause I see.
A home address shown to customers
If customers don't come to your house or shop, Google says to hide the address and use a service area. Showing a home address you don't serve customers from can trigger a review.
A virtual office, coworking desk, or P.O. box
Google doesn't accept a P.O. box or a mailbox address. A virtual office only counts if it's staffed during business hours. Plenty of contractors signed up for a cheap "office address" to look bigger. That's a common suspension trigger.
Big edits all at once
Changing your name, category, and address in the same week can flag the profile for review. If something doesn't match what Google can confirm, it gets suspended.
Duplicate or extra listings
A second profile for the same business, or one "location" per county you serve, can get the whole set suspended. One business, one profile.
Reviews that don't look real
Buying reviews, trading reviews with other businesses, or having a wave of reviews from family and employees can get reviews removed and, in some cases, restrict the profile.
The reinstatement steps
Here's the current flow, based on Google's help pages as of September 2026.
- Sign in to the Google Account that owns the profile.
- Check the account itself. If your Google Account is restricted, Google says you have to get that reinstated before you can appeal the profile.
- Open the Business Profile appeals tool and pick the suspended profile.
- Read the reason and the policy link. That's what you're fixing.
- Fix the problem on the profile. Remove the keywords from your name. Hide the home address. Replace the virtual office. Whatever the reason says.
- Submit the appeal.
- Upload your proof. Google may offer an evidence form after you submit. Have your files ready before you start, because Google says the upload window closes after 60 minutes.
- Wait and check status. Google says reviews can take up to five business days. Statuses include Submitted, Approved, Not approved, and Can't be appealed. Don't file a second appeal for the same issue while one is pending.
What proof to have ready
Google lists official documents like these. Get them together before you open the appeals tool:
- Business registration (for a Pennsylvania LLC, your filing with the Department of State).
- Business license, or your Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor registration number.
- A tax document with the business name, like an IRS EIN letter.
- A business utility bill: phone, internet, electric, or water.
Extra proof that helps a contractor:
- Photos of your truck with your business name on it.
- Photos of signage, your shop, or equipment.
- A link to your website showing the same name, phone, and service area.
Every document should show the same name and address as the profile. If your truck says one name, your LLC says another, and your profile says a third, fix that first.
If the appeal is denied
Read what the denial says. Usually the problem wasn't fully fixed, or the proof didn't match. Tighten it up. Match every document to the profile, fix anything else that breaks the rules, then check whether the appeals tool still shows it as eligible. Google's own community forum has product experts who answer suspension questions, and it's worth posting there with details if you're stuck.
How to avoid getting suspended again
- Use your real name. No keywords.
- Hide your address if customers don't visit.
- One profile per business.
- Make one change at a time.
- Get reviews only from real customers.

What this costs you in jobs
A suspended profile doesn't just lose rankings. It removes your reviews and your phone number from the place most people find you.
Say your profile brought in six calls a week and you book one in three. That's two jobs a week. For a foundation or waterproofing company, where jobs typically run $5,000 to $15,000, a two-week suspension can cost you tens of thousands of dollars in work that went to the next company in the Maps box.
The same math applies when your profile is fine but your website drops the ball. In my September 2026 review of 35 Pittsburgh foundation and waterproofing websites, 21 didn't show their Google reviews or rating anywhere on the homepage. That's proof you already earned, hidden from the people deciding whether to call. Get a free Lead Leak Report and I'll check yours.
If your profile's fine but you still can't find yourself, see why your business isn't showing up on Google.

Common questions
How long does a Google Business Profile appeal take?
Google says appeal reviews can take up to five business days. That's Google's published estimate, not a promise, and some owners report waiting longer. Check the status in the appeals tool instead of filing again. Submitting a second appeal for the same issue while the first is pending doesn't speed anything up and Google specifically asks you not to do it.
What documents does Google want for a Business Profile appeal?
Google asks for official proof that your business is real and matches the profile. Examples it lists include a business registration, business license, tax certificate, and a business utility bill like phone, electric, or internet. For a Pennsylvania contractor, your Home Improvement Contractor registration is a good one. Make sure the name and address on every document match what's on your profile.
Why was my Google Business Profile suspended with no warning?
Google usually doesn't warn you first. Suspensions often follow an edit (a name, address, or category change), a report from a competitor, or an automated check that flags something like a keyword-stuffed name or a virtual office address. The appeals tool shows which policy Google says you broke, so start there before you change anything else.
Will I lose my Google reviews if my profile is suspended?
While suspended, the profile and its reviews don't show to customers. If the appeal is approved and the profile is reinstated, the reviews typically come back with it. That's one big reason not to delete a suspended profile and start a new one. A fresh profile starts at zero reviews, and creating a new one to get around a suspension can make things worse.
Should I create a new Google Business Profile if mine is suspended?
No. Fix the cause and appeal the original. A new profile for the same business looks like an attempt to get around the suspension, and it starts with zero reviews and no history. If your Google Account itself is restricted, Google says you have to get the account reinstated first before you can appeal the profile.
Can a suspended Google Business Profile be appealed more than once?
Google doesn't publish a set number of appeals. It does say not to file a new appeal for the same issue while one is pending. If an appeal is denied, fix whatever the denial points to, gather stronger proof, and then use the appeals tool again if it still shows the decision as eligible. Some decisions show as 'can't be appealed,' and those need a different path.
